WHAT FUSION DID FOR ONE COMPANY
One such example of this initiative in action is BlueStack Brewery, a start-up microbrewery based in Donegal involved in the manufacture and distribution of soft drinks to pubs, shops and supermarkets. According to Edward McDaid, BlueStack General Manager, the FUSION project has been vital to the company's ongoing development: "Getting approval for our FUSION project allowed us to search for a graduate and to work with the University of Ulster in Coleraine which has a particular expertise in food science. Our background is soft drinks and we needed someone with food technology experience.

The FUSION programme provided a disciplined approach to our work and, importantly, gave us an entry point to obtain lots of information from other universities with knowledge of brewing technologies and the processes involved." Edward plans to be in commercial production by May 2007. "We have carried out 36 experimental brews to date and are in the process of obtaining a brewing licence, all of which would not be possible if it was not for the FUSION programme and InterTradeIreland 's continued help."

WHAT INNOVA DID FOR ONE COMPANY
INNOVA has helped Fusion Antibodies in Belfast and Opsona Therapeutics Ltd in Dublin to join forces for the discovery and potential development of groundbreaking drugs to treat diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr Mark Heffernan, CEO at Opsona Therapeutics said: "The project was set up to discover new anti-inflammatory drugs based on potential compounds already developed by Fusion. Fusion Antibodies has the skills to identify such compounds while Opsona specialises in screening such prototype drugs to test their applicability in inflammatory diseases." For this project, the two companies are particularly focused on developing a drug that targets MS, a disease for which no drug has been approved for treatment of its primary progressive form. Dr Heffernan highlighted the importance of InterTradeIreland's INNOVA programme to Opsona in developing pioneering medical research in Ireland.

Successful Collaboration

He said: "Not only has INNOVA raised money for valuable research creating the potential to develop new drugs, it has also enabled us to expand on our existing techniques. Our collaboration with Fusion Antibodies has been a very positive experience and we are already starting to get the first results of the research." Shane Olwill of Fusion Antibodies agrees. "INNOVA has allowed us to solidify links with a very innovative company in the Republic of Ireland. We've long known about Opsona but we have never had an opportunity or a vehicle to move a project forward with them," he said.

The projected revenue stream from the seven initial INNOVA projects over the next 5 years is over £16 million. This represents a huge return on InterTradeIreland's initial investment of just over £2m. Partner companies will also support these projects with a significant investment of over £3.3m in total. As well as encouraging R&D collaboration on an all-island basis InterTradeIreland is playing a key role in facilitating the work of the USIreland R&D Partnership, which hopes to deliver major advances in diabetes, cystic fibrosis, respiratory infections and nano and sensor technology.

Encourage and Supporting Research

The Partnership aims to encourage and support the best and the brightest researchers on the island of Ireland and the United States and aims to bring innovations to the marketplace, resulting in major health and economic benefits. It is hoped that the first successful projects will be announced early next year.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT: BIG BUSINESS

Global governments are competing to attract large pharmaceutical and technology companies to their shores with appealing incentives.

On the island of Ireland the drive for excellence in Research and Development (R&D) has been gathering pace in recent years. InterTradeIreland's Chief Executive Liam Nellis believes that the key to success is collaboration.

Building Alliances

"Over the last six years we have been encouraging and supporting small companies on both sides of the border to build alliances, to pool their resources and to share information so that they can become more profitable and competitive. Significant investment in research and innovation is a key requirement for the long-term competitiveness of both economies. As a small island it makes a great deal of sense for us to be cooperating in this area," he argues. The announcement in June 2006 of the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (2006-2013) represents a genuine cross-Government; cross departmental strategy that indicated the Irish Government now took the development of a knowledge economy very seriously. In State expenditure alone there is €3.8 billion on offer.

Excellence In Research

The shared vision is that by 2013 Ireland will be "internationally renowned for the excellence of its research, and will be at the forefront in generating and using new knowledge for economic and social progress, within an innovation driven culture".

Main Aims Of The Strategy

  • Quality Irish scientific research internationally recognised
  • Massive funding to third-level for research
  • Double the number of PhD graduates
  • Support Irish and foreign companies doing research
  • Assist in turning top research into saleable products and services
  • Encourage school goers to continue study of science

The Regional Innovation Strategy for Northern Ireland, published in June 2003, states its primary purpose as providing 'a framework for the creation of a globally competitive, innovation-driven regional economy in Northern Ireland.' Certainly, Northern Ireland has achieved a great deal in recent years. Under the heading 'think | create | innovate', R&D is playing an ever increasing role in Northern Ireland business.

Currently, Northern Ireland can claim some of the most innovative companies within the UK, working across such multi-disciplinary technology areas such as nanotechnology, digital media and agri-food.

Fusion

Science, technology and innovation is a key priority for InterTradeIreland with several successful initiatives up and running. One of InterTradeIreland flagship programmes is FUSION. This scheme is an all-island technology transfer programme, which develops and facilitates threeway partnerships and projects between companies with technology based development needs, third level institutes and high calibre graduates.

It is particularly relevant to companies where increased knowledge and technology transfer is crucial to business, for example: polymers, packaging, health and life sciences, food science, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, information and communication technologies and various forms of engineering.

How does fusion work?

FUSION develops and facilitates partnerships between companies, with a need on one side of the border, and colleges or universities that can provide the required specialist expertise, on the other side. A high calibre graduate is then employed by the company to spearhead a project for a period of up to 2 years. The graduate acts as the link and agent of technology transfer between the university and the company.

What's the deal for companies?

InterTradeIreland will provide a support package worth up to £61,500 towards the costs of carrying out a technology related project which is central to a company's development needs.
The funding will support:

  • 50% of a graduate employee's salary.
  • 100% of other eligible costs (including academic expertise).

Since August 2001, the programme has helped approximately 200 companies across the island of Ireland achieve their strategic goals. To date over £10 million of benefits have been reported by companies and this figure is expected to increase five fold as projects complete and realise their full potential over the coming years.

Innova

Another of InterTradeIreland 's successful programmes is INNOVA. The programme provides an incentive for cross-border R&D collaboration consisting of industrial research or pre-competitive development activities. Companies can acquire new knowledge that may be used to develop new products and services or significantly improve existing ones. Innova is a pilot initiative aimed at stimulating, promoting and supporting R&D co-operation between firms, North and South, with the support of public research organisations where required.

Objectives

  • To encourage and promote firm to firm research collaboration on a crossborder basis supported by research institutions when appropriate
  • To foster commercial links and to create a more sophisticated critical mass of the resources needed for such activities
  • To encouragethe attainment of new competencies for participants
  • To encourage mutual learning (North & South) and the sharing of best practice
  • To contribute to the development of the island economy.

Eligibility

What type of projects are eligible for support? Eligible projects can consist of industrial research or precompetitive development activities: Industrial research is aimed at acquiring new knowledge that may be useful in developing new products, processes or services or in significantly improving existing products, processes or services. Precompetitive development activities involve taking the results of industrial research and shaping these into a plan for new or improved products, processes or services, including the creation of a prototype which could not be used commercially.
