SOCIAL SUPER MUM

Kelly McKenna, Founder of Mumstown

A unique social networking site is sure to keep curious bloggers in the know and provide a network of friends

Mumstown.ie is a local networking website offering all kinds of information for mothers, ranging from family-friendly events to news, community information and forums.  After three months in the making, Mumstown went live in February of this year and its founder Kelly McKenna has never looked back.

DIE HARD BLOGGERS

McKenna who hails from Montreal says that the concept was triggered by her own personal experience of how hard it was for her to access local information and family activities when she first moved to Ireland three years ago. Mumstown has received a lot of national press coverage and recently McKenna has been inundated by regional requests to launch other sites outside of the Drogheda area. Advertising on the website has been very successful, which McKenna attributes to the fact that it costs a fraction of the price in comparison with other outlets. According to Pigsback.com, mothers control up to 75% of household budgets which she sees as an obvious draw for advertisers. Social networking is not just a teenage phenomenon and has taken a firm grip on information hungry mothers with some die-hard bloggers already boasting over a thousand postings on the forum.

SENSE OF COMMUNITY

McKenna is presently expanding her Drogheda network to encompass Dundalk and Newry, as well as looking into merchandising a recognisable brand for Mumstown users so that they can recognise each other on a day to day basis creating further networking potential. At present, the franchising idea is at the development stage with the creation of a new website that would be super-managed by McKenna. Each regional franchise would then have its own distinct management system.

A friend once advised McKenna, “don’t wish for anything more than you can handle because it might just come true.” Now that Mumstown is quite literally snowballing it seems the advice may have hit home for McKenna, but she’s far from complaining, the present expansion and business franchising is something that she is thoroughly enjoying.
